In September of 2004, I got a call from a friend about a German Shepherd/Husky
mix puppy that needed a home. He was at the humane society in Mercer County IL,
which is a kill-shelter, and they just couldn’t find a home for him. Overall he
was a very good boy, but he was pretty big and already 2-3 years old, so no one
really wanted to adopt him. Norma Jewell, head of the Mississippi Valley German
Shepherd Dog Rescue, had been working with him to teach him some basic commands
and general manners.
When the outlook started to look grim, she called and asked if I would consider
taking him in. I hesitated at first, I already had two cats and just wasn’t
sure I could handle anymore. However, I could not stand the thought of what
might happen if he did not find a home soon, so I decided to give it a chance.
The first couple of weeks were full of surprises in his interactions with my
cats, I just was not sure if it would work out at all. Fortunately, the cats
finally gave in and gave him a break, and now they are all the best of friends.
I have actually caught a group nap with all of them snuggled up together…one of
the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I am so glad that I decided to give Payton a
home, and at this point, cannot imagine life without him.
